How to choose a cabinet pull or handle

Start with how the cabinet gets used. A drawer that opens with two fingers is fine with a slim pull. A wide pantry door or a heavy trash pull-out wants a longer bar and a deeper grip.

Think about the shape of your hand and the shape of the front. A round bar is easy to grab from any angle. A flat strap sits close to the door and reads as a clean line. A cup pull gives you a lip to hook, which suits lower drawers and bins.

Finish ties the room together. Brushed brass warms up white cabinets. Matte black and brushed nickel read cooler and more modern. Antique brass sits well with older homes and natural wood.

Sizes, hole centers and measuring

Hole centers are the distance between the centers of the two mounting holes. This is the number that matters most when you replace hardware. Measure from the center of one screw hole to the center of the other. Do not measure the overall length of the pull.

Our pulls cover a wide range of hole centers:

  • 2-1/2 to 8-13/16 in (64 to 224 mm) on the Line / Ball-foot pull, six sizes
  • 3-3/4, 5-1/16, 6-5/16 or 7-9/16 in (96, 128, 160 or 192 mm) on the Line / Flat D pull
  • 3-3/4, 5-1/16 or 8-13/16 in (96, 128 or 224 mm) on the Knurl / Round-foot pull
  • 3-3/4 to 12-5/8 in (96 to 320 mm) on the Heritage / Antique bar pull, six sizes
  • 3-3/4 to 12-5/8 in (96 to 320 mm) on the Knurl / Nickel bar pull, seven sizes
  • 3-3/4 or 5-1/16 in (96 or 128 mm) on the Arc / Split pull

If you are drilling new holes, pick one hole center and use it across the kitchen. Common choices are 3-3/4 in (96 mm) for standard drawers and 5-1/16 in (128 mm) for wider doors. Longer bars, up to 12-5/8 in (320 mm), suit appliance panels and tall pantry doors.

Projection is how far the pull stands off the door. The Heritage / Antique bar pull projects 1 in (25 mm). The Knurl / Round-foot pull projects 1-7/16 in (36 mm). The Knurl / Nickel bar pull projects 1-5/16 in (34 mm). More projection gives your fingers more room. Less projection keeps a low profile.

Materials and finishes

Solid brass is the heavy, warm option. It takes a brushed brass finish, an antique brass finish or a brushed nickel finish, and it holds up to daily use. The Arc / Split pull, Curve / Brass Cup Pull, The Long Bent Brass Cabinet Pull, Line / Flat D pull, Line / Ball-foot pull, Knurl / Round-foot pull and Knurl / Nickel bar pull are all solid brass.

Stainless steel is the cool, tough choice. The Knurl / Stainless Steel Cabinet Pull has a 15/16 in (24 mm) diameter and a diamond knurl grip.

Aluminum alloy is light and clean. The Aluminum Alloy Cabinet Handle and Knob and the Hide / Slim Cabinet Pull both use it.

Black nylon is quiet and soft to the touch. The Black Nylon Pull Handle is a good fit for a shop, a garage or a utility cabinet.

Wood and brass brings two materials together. The Wood and Brass Cabinet Pull uses solid brass with walnut or beech wood.

Mounting and screws

Most of our pulls fix from the back with two screws. That means you mount the screw through the hole in the door and into the pull. The Curve / Brass Cup Pull, The Long Bent Brass Cabinet Pull, Line / Flat D pull, Knurl / Stainless Steel Cabinet Pull, Hide / Slim Cabinet Pull, Knurl / Round-foot pull and Wood and Brass Cabinet Pull all fix from the back.

The Black Nylon Pull Handle fixes from the front with two screws. The Aluminum Alloy Cabinet Handle and Knob fixes from the back with two screws.

Screw length depends on your door thickness. The Knurl / Stainless Steel Cabinet Pull and the Wood and Brass Cabinet Pull both include 1 in (25 mm) and 1-3/4 in (45 mm) screws. The Curve / Brass Cup Pull includes M4 x 20 mm self-tapping screws. The Black Nylon Pull Handle includes two M4 screws. The Long Bent Brass Cabinet Pull includes 1 in (25 mm) screws. Matching screws come with the Aluminum Alloy Cabinet Handle and Knob and the Hide / Slim Cabinet Pull.

Care

Wipe with a dry cloth. That is all these pulls need. Keep water and cleaners off the surface, and dry the pull after a spill. A soft cloth keeps brushed and antique finishes looking even.

Pulls and knobs together

A common layout is a pull on every drawer and a knob on every door, or a pull on both. The Aluminum Alloy Cabinet Handle and Knob gives you a matched handle and knob in one listing. If you want a single look across the kitchen, pick one family and stay with it, like the Line / Flat D pull in brushed brass, coffee bronze or matte black.

Questions

How do I measure hole centers on a cabinet pull?

Measure from the center of one mounting hole to the center of the other. That number is the hole center. Do not measure the full length of the pull. Match it to the listing before you buy.

What size cabinet pull should I use for drawers and doors?

A 3-3/4 in (96 mm) hole center suits standard drawers. A 5-1/16 in (128 mm) hole center suits wider doors. Longer bars, up to 12-5/8 in (320 mm), fit appliance panels and tall pantry doors.

Do the pulls come with screws?

Most do. The Knurl / Stainless Steel Cabinet Pull and the Wood and Brass Cabinet Pull include 1 in (25 mm) and 1-3/4 in (45 mm) screws. The Curve / Brass Cup Pull includes M4 x 20 mm screws. The Black Nylon Pull Handle includes two M4 screws.

Which material is best for a kitchen or bath?

Solid brass holds up well and comes in brushed brass, antique brass or brushed nickel. Stainless steel is tough and cool. Aluminum alloy is light. Black nylon is quiet and soft. All of them wipe clean with a dry cloth.

Can I mix pulls and knobs on the same cabinets?

Yes. A common layout is a pull on every drawer and a knob on every door. The Aluminum Alloy Cabinet Handle and Knob gives you a matched handle and knob in one listing.
