What it is

The Fold / Swing-Up Stainless Shelf Bracket is an L shaped bracket with a hinge at the corner. The wall plate mounts flat, and the shelf arm folds down against the wall when the shelf is not in use. Each bracket is made of stainless steel and sold as a pack of 2, so one order covers both ends of a shelf.

The folding action suits spots where a fixed bracket would be in the way: a laundry counter, a garage workbench, a small kitchen, a camper or a closet. Fold the arm up to set a board on it, fold it down to clear the space.

Sizes

Length is measured along the shelf arm. Height is measured along the wall plate. Both are given in inches with the metric value in brackets.

Length Height
8 in (190 mm) 3.07 in (78 mm)
10 in (250 mm) 3.66 in (93 mm)
12 in (290 mm) 5.03 in (128 mm)
14 in (340 mm) 5.5 in (140 mm)
16 in (395 mm) 6.2 in (158 mm)
18 in (440 mm) 6.2 in (158 mm)
20 in (490 mm) 6.2 in (158 mm)

Short arms like the 8 in (190 mm) and 10 in (250 mm) pair well with narrow ledges and short boards. Longer arms like the 16 in (395 mm), 18 in (440 mm) and 20 in (490 mm) carry deeper shelves for books, tools or storage bins. Match the bracket length to the depth of your board so the arm supports it fully.

Colors

Every size comes in silver, white or black. Silver shows the raw stainless finish and reads clean against tile, painted drywall and concrete. White blends into light walls and painted cabinets. Black gives a sharper line on dark walls or stained wood. Pick one color for the whole run of brackets so the shelf looks intentional.

How to fit and use it

Plan the shelf height first, then mark both bracket positions with a level. The two brackets in the pack should sit at the same height and the same distance apart as the board is long.

Mount the wall plate to solid framing or to a wall anchor rated for the load. Fasteners are not included, so choose screws that match your wall and the holes in the plate. A stud finder saves time here.

Set the board on the folded up arms and check that it sits flat. If the board rocks, adjust one bracket slightly until both arms meet the wood at the same point. For a cleaner look, drill pilot holes in the board and drive short screws up through the arm into the underside of the shelf.

Keep the load within the bracket's rated capacity. These brackets are not for loads beyond that rating. Heavy items like full book rows, tile boxes or large planters belong on a bracket rated for the weight, and a folding bracket carries less than a fixed triangle bracket of the same size.

Fold the arm down when the shelf is empty. The hinge should move without force. If it stiffens over time, a drop of light oil at the pivot keeps it moving.

Care

Stainless steel wipes clean with a soft cloth and warm water. For fingerprints or kitchen film, use a mild soap and dry the surface right after. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners, which can dull the finish or leave marks. In a damp room, dry the bracket after cleaning so water does not sit on the metal. Check the mounting screws once or twice a year and tighten any that have worked loose.

Questions

How many brackets come in one order?

Each order is a pack of 2 brackets. That is enough for one shelf, with one bracket at each end.

What sizes are available?

The bracket comes in 8 in (190 mm), 10 in (250 mm), 12 in (290 mm), 14 in (340 mm), 16 in (395 mm), 18 in (440 mm) and 20 in (490 mm) lengths. Height runs from 3.07 in (78 mm) to 6.2 in (158 mm) depending on the size.

What colors can I choose?

Silver, white and black. Every size comes in all three colors, so pick the length you need and then the finish you want.

Can I use these for a heavy shelf?

Only within the bracket's rated capacity. These are not for loads beyond that rating, and a folding bracket holds less than a fixed triangle bracket of the same length.
