What this set is

This is a mortise door knob set made of solid brass. The knob and rosette are brass, and the set works with a mortise latch that sits inside the door edge. Screws fix the latch from the edge and the face, so the hardware stays tight in the door.

A mortise set suits interior doors where you want a traditional look and a solid feel. It is sold as a single set, so order the number of sets you need for your doors.

Sizes and fit

Spec Measurement
Backset 2-3/8 in (60 mm)
Door thickness Up to 2 in (50 mm)
Screw holes 1 in (25 mm) and 2-1/8 in (54 mm)

The 2-3/8 in (60 mm) backset is a common size for US homes. Check your door before you order. Measure from the edge of the door to the center of the knob hole. If that distance is 2-3/8 in (60 mm), this set fits.

The set is not for doors thicker than 2 in (50 mm). If your door is thicker, this set will not work.

The latch screws use two hole spacings: 1 in (25 mm) and 2-1/8 in (54 mm). Check the holes on your door edge and face to confirm the match.

Colors and functions

Pick the finish and the function you need. Finishes:

  • Antique brass
  • Matte brass
  • Matte black
  • Brushed nickel

Functions:

  • Passage: no lock, for hallways and closets
  • Privacy: locks from the inside, for bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Double dummy: no latch, for the inactive side of a pair of doors
  • Thumb turn set: locks with a turn piece
  • Keyed entry: locks with a key from the outside
  • Coin turn: locks with a coin from the outside

Each finish comes in the functions listed above, so you can match one look across a whole house. Passage and privacy sets cover most interior doors. Dummy sets work on double doors where one side stays fixed. Thumb turn, keyed entry and coin turn sets suit doors that need a lock.

How to fit it

  1. Check the backset. Measure from the door edge to the center of the knob hole. It should be 2-3/8 in (60 mm).
  2. Check the door thickness. It should be 2 in (50 mm) or less.
  3. Check the hole spacing on the door edge and face. The screws use 1 in (25 mm) and 2-1/8 in (54 mm) holes.
  4. Set the mortise latch into the door edge and fix it with screws from the edge and face.
  5. Fit the knob and rosette on both sides and tighten the screws.
  6. Test the latch and the lock before you close the door.

If you are replacing an old mortise set, compare the old backset and hole spacing with the numbers above. A match means a simple swap. If the numbers differ, the set will not drop in without new holes.

Care

Wipe the brass with a dry cloth. Keep water and cleaners off the surface. A dry wipe now and then keeps the finish even and the knob clean.
